SIGNIFICANCE OF LIGHTING LAMPS IN THE TAMIL MONTH OF MARGAZHI

Peaceful atmosphere is created by lighting the lamp in the evenings and early mornings. It should be noted that if lit in the early morning hours, the positivity is retained in the puja room throughout the day. Lighting the lamp during the significant occasions and any new beginnings symbolises prosperity and welfare.

Diya is to be lighted at sandhya kaal. Pratah Sandhya: Light it half an hour before sunrise, so that your light will transit into the light of the Sun. Saayam Sandhya: Light it half an hour before sunset, so that when the sun sets, your light will already be there to light up the darkness that is to come.

The warm, bright glow emitted from a diya is considered auspicious, regarded to represent enlightenment, prosperity, knowledge and wisdom. Diyas represent the triumph of light over dark, good over evil with the most notable example of this being on the day of Diwali

It is often seen as a way to dispel darkness, ignorance, and negativity, and to invite positivity, knowledge, and auspiciousness. The lamp is considered a symbol of enlightenment, wisdom, and prosperity, and its light is believed to bring clarity and guidance.

This is a regular pattern of lighting lamps followed by many Indians at home. This practice of lighting lamp in the Pooja room is an age old practice. But here in Tamil Nadu the lamps are lit outside homes in the early hours of the day in Aipasi and margazhi, and in the evenings in karthigai . The month of  Aipasi, is (Oct15-Nov14) karthigai (Nov 15- Dec 14) and through Margazhi (Dec 15-Jan 14) months.

Two Diya’s made of mud is lit and kept each one in the two sides at the door step of the main entrance. The scientific reason for this is : By lighting the lamp, the humidity in the atmosphere also increases. At the same time, by lighting more lamps, the temperature of the atmosphere increases. The air is heavy during the winter. By lighting a lamp, it becomes lighter and clearer.

Specialty of lighting lamps in Margazhi is because Margazhi Month holds immense spiritual importance, highlighted by Lord Krishna's words in the Bhagavad Gita, "Among the twelve months, I am Margazhi." A pivotal event during this month is the chanting of the Tiruppavai of Andal, consisting of 30 verses, with each verse chanted daily.
