SNAKE GOURD - A VEGETABLE THAT GROWS IN DIFFERENT SHAPES

  




Snake gourd is a vegetable that is grown by many in South India in their backyards and terrace gardens. It is the only vegetable that  grows  in different shapes and sizes. Sometimes narrow, twisted and elongated.  It is a easy vegetable in every way. Popularly known as  Chichinda or Padwal in Hindi, Potlakaaya in Telugu, Chichinga in Bengali, Pudalankaai in Tamil and Padavalanga in Malayalam is used to prepare many varieties of dishes. It goes well with rice.

With regard to nutritional properties the predominant minerals present in snake gourd are potassium and phosphorous. It contains vitamins A and E. It also contains various bioactive components like carotenoids, flavonoids, etc.

In villages aged people are more served with snake gourd rather than for youngsters as it is soft, spongy and easy to digest. More over it helps to control glucose level in the blood and keep diabetic condition under control. The vegetable is a remedy for many stomach ailments and inflammation. It is helpful in removing toxic contents and is a wonderful solution for skin diseases.

In general Snake gourd is a vegetable that is usually cooked before eating. It can be had in form of curry, stir fried or added to soups.  Here is a  traditional recipe of snake gourd.  

Being a vegetable low in calories and packed with essential nutrients. Snake gourd can be consumed daily. It is particularly beneficial for people trying to lose weight. It also provides a surplus of dietary fibres which are easy on the stomach and reduce food cravings. It gives a feeling of fullness for longer period of time.

Snake gourds have nearly zero cholesterol content. Thus they are safe for regular consumption. They are especially beneficial for people with heart problems. Snake gourds in a boiled form can be easily incorporated into various homemade dishes of Indian cuisine. It is great heart-healthy food.
