Veldt Grape or  Cissus quadrangularis has been used in the traditional medicine of India for centuries. The plant contains compounds called triterpenes that have been found to have anti-inflammatory properties.  The plant has been used to treat obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, bone loss and various other conditions.

In Ayurveda the Plant called  Pirandai in Tamil is considered as the best medicine for joining the broken bones.

It is called in Sanskrit Vajravalli.  It is also called Asthi-Sambandhini or Asthi-Samhaari  which means joins the broken bones.  It's in take is suggested and consumed by preparing its chutney or dry powder.

It can be grown in our homes.  The joints of this plant which are cut and left  behind after taking the needy parts, can be reused for planting.  It  can be planted in mud pot or the soil.  It is like a climber which grows slowly with proper watering.  It puts forth the flower also. It is grown in every house hold of Tamil Nadu easily. It is also hung in front of the house  with the belief that will ward off evil eyes.

Many keep away from it because of the itchiness.  Sometimes the plant creates a sort of itch in hands when touched. The tender ones are selected for cooking and it will be less itchy.

Veldt grape provides relief from:

  • high cholestrol
If taken regularly, it will help reduce weight, and it not only helps reduce weight and helps lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. Apart from these it is usedin Ayurvedic medicine for stomach disorders and even as a poultice for sprains. Pirandai chutney is quite intense and a little goes a long way. In our home, the chutney is the easiest way of getting this special nutrient.
