We live in a world surrounded by every electronic gadget imaginable. From plasma TV's to laptops, an array of gadgets captures our fancy. Children and teenagers live and breathe using these gadgets. The best part of the time is spent in gaming, texting and chatting.
No doubt thee gadgets can perform almost all functions from the comfort of people's homes or offices. But these gadgets carry with them the curse of being misused or abused.
Recently I came across a play "THE CELLPHONE EPIDEMIC'' written by Claudia I. Haas, an American playwright. She primarily writes for youth. The play throws light on how the reckless use of cellphones by teenagers, unmindful of the consequences can cost their life or ruin their future.
The protagonists in the play belong to the generation- next who fondly refer to themselves as "texting community" Alicia is so preoccupied with texting that she fails to see the man-hole and falls into it while Jess walks into lamppost.
Taking a humorous tone the playwright allows the friends to be infuriated by the "society's total disregard to texting." Alicia and Jess question the authorities and device a plan to start a movement using social networking sites which is typical of teenagers. They also plan to protest by picketing near manholes and lampposts.
The whole incident is seen from the perspective of the teenagers, who find the existing system outdated. They blame the safety measures of the city and find the lampposts, trash cans and kerbs as potential threats to the "texting community"
They fail to understand or even acknowledge the fact that they are to be blamed and that the disregard shown by them to their own safety has landed them in the hospital. Beneath the fine texture of humour that is woven into the play, lies the hope that tragedies can be averted if one learns to use these gadgets wisely.
