From among the hundreds of Mahakavyas in Sanskrit dating from the 1st
century B.C. to 12th century A.D., Indian critics have selected five
works as the best which are known as PANCHAMAHAKAVYAS. They are:
Raghuvamsam and Kumarasambhavam of Kalidasa,
kiratajuniyam of Bharavi,
Sisupalavadam of Magha and
Naishadeeyam of Sri Harsha.
Among these RAGHUVAMSAM is the most popular and widely read poem.
Kalidasa, the foremost among the Indian poets and one of the great poets of
the world, is the author of three poems and three dramas. Kalidasa’s Raghuvamsa
consists of 19 cantos in which some selected important incidents in the lives
of eight kings- Dilipa, Raghu, Aja, Dasaratha, Sri Rama, Kusa, Atithi, and
Agnivarna are described in detail and another twenty- one kings are just
briefly enumerated in one canto. The story of Sri Rama is, of course, narrated
in full and it occupies, quite fittingly, the central part of the poem. It is
the only poetic work dealing with 29 kings of same dynasty. Kalidasa’s poetic Genius reflects in all the verses
from the beginning to the end.
Though Raghuvamsam was written in Sanskrit, many translated versions are now
available. This book reflects the true culture and civilisation of Indian
people and give a correct and beautiful description of Indian scenery. That’s
why I suggest this book to everyone.
